Kurt Donald Cobain was born in Hoquiam, Washington near to Aberdeen to Wendy and Donald on 20th February 1967. He was a bright and happy child, showing his interest for music and ear for rhythm from as young as 2 years old. In 1975 Kurt's parents split and divorced breaking up the home. From then on he was never the same happy child, retreating more into a world of his own. He lived with his mother for a year, but when she got a new boyfriend who Kurt didn't get on with he moved in with his father at a trailer park at Montesano. Things went well at first, but when his father remarried Kurt found he had a new step-mother and two step-siblings and couldn't stand the situation. Up until he was 17 he moved around between aunts uncles parents and grandparents.
When he was about 17 he discovered the joys of Punk rock and got into bands such as Aerosmith and the Sex Pistols which captured his imagination. He began learning the guitar and made friends with members of the local band, the Melvins. He moved back to Aberdeen to live once more with his mother and lost touch somewhat with his Montesano Melvins connections but kindled new friendships with Dale Crover and Chris Novoselic.
But things didnt stay smooth for long and once again Kurt was moving from house to house. The pressures got too much and he eventually quit high school just prior to graduation, getting employment briefly as a janitor. He lived at this time anywhere that he could find, including underneath the North Aberdeen Bridge, a time which was to resurface in the form of the lyrics to the song 'Underneath the Bridge'. The only constant in his life through all of this was Kurt's music and sometime during 1986 formed the first band Fecal Matter with Dale Crover and Greg Hokanson.
It was around this time that Kurt got his first heroin hit (incidentally a few years before he met Courtney who is often blamed for his habit), he was impressed with the association of drugs and rock and roll and had been looking for kicks in his life for some time. He spent a lot of time aruond Olympia, home of the K record label and eventually moved in there with his girlfriend, Tracy Marander. It was also at this time when Kurt started to play with Chris and the first incarnation of Nirvana was born as 'The Stiff Woodies' to quote of their many names.

Krist Novoselic was born on 16th May 1965 to parents Krist and Maria in Aberdeen, Washington.
